Welcome A-Board Eric!
First and foremost, our Smith Yacht Sale's Founder, Eric Smith has been invited to, and has joined the Yacht Broker Association of America's (YBAA) Board of Directors! Congrats to Eric on his new position! What does this mean? Eric consistently strives to operate Smith Yacht Sales with the highest level of expertise, integrity and service possible. Adhering to a ritual of "best practices" with policies and procedures is a founding value here at Smith Yacht Sales, and as a YBAA Board Member, Eric will be able to contribute his professionalism and knowledge while helping shape the future of Brokerage Industry. As a YBAA Board Member, Eric will bring the voice of the customer and be able to offer multiple points of view when weighing in on industry information and change.

It's an exciting time here at Smith Yacht Sales! The brokerage business continues to grow at a rapid pace.With five full time brokers in addition to himself, Eric is proud to say we now consistently offer one of the largest selections of pre-owned boat inventory on Boston's South Shore! Our boat turnover is high and we are constantly refreshing our inventory. How do we do this? We have a Flagship Office located at the Hingham Shipyard Marinas, in Hingham, MA, a secondary office located at Great Bay Marine in Newington, NH and a satellite office across the water at Sunset Bay Marina in Hull, MA. From Maine to Cape Cod, we have brokers who have developed fantastic customer relationships and we are able to pull inventory across the Northeastern Seaboard!

Relying on yacht sales professionals is always your best bet when buying or selling a boat.

Buying and selling a boat can be more complicated, problematic and risky than a real estate transaction. Unlike real-estate transactions, vessel transactions do not come under the jurisdiction of State Laws except in California and Florida. You can eliminate potential headaches by working with a qualified, reputable yacht sale professional who will help you navigate what could otherwise become a complex and difficult transaction.
I know this from personal experience. As the Executive Director of the Yacht Brokers Association of America (YBAA) and based on my40-year career as a yacht sales professional, I often answer calls from frantic and confused boat buyers and sellers with horror stories about sales transactions gone bad. Whether it was a “For Sale By Owner” (FSBO) or a transaction with a less than scrupulous broker, I can only advise these boat buyers and sellers to follow the dispute resolution provisions in their agreements, if one exists, and/or seek the advice of a maritime/admiralty attorney. “The law of the sea” is vastly different than “The law of the land.”
Buyers and sellers alike need a proper, time-tested and proven vessel purchase and sale agreement that can address all of the issues in vessel transaction. In the hands of an experienced professional, this document can help eliminate potential snags and/or disputes between buyer and seller.
The buying and selling process requires a great deal of due diligence on the part of the buyer, including a vessel survey, trialrun, finance and insurance contingencies, obtaining clear title, proper transfer of funds including deposits and escrow, and a host of other terms and conditions that must be clearly defined in writing and agreed to by both buyer and seller. Without proper documentation, buyer and seller are both at serious risk of ending up with a transaction gone sour, due to some detail that was not clearly defined at the outset.
Further, and often more importantly, a purchase and sale agreement that does not specifically address dispute resolution between buyer and seller can lead to costly legal battles that could take years to resolve. A buyer and seller, no matter the value of the transactions and the apparent simplicity of such, should always seek the services of a yacht sales professional who is a member of a professional trade association that has a strict code of ethics and standard business practices, a requirement for their members to maintain a dedicated escrow account for client funds and standardized forms such as listing and purchase and sale agreements. Vincent J. Petrella, CPYB has been in the marine industry for over 40 years. In 2007 he retired as the President and Owner of Hellier Yacht Sales, New London, CT, the first sailboat dealership in the country to become a Certified Dealership under the Marine Industry Certified Dealership program.
While serving as President of the Yacht Brokers Association of America (YBAA), America’s oldest brokerage association, Vin was instrumental in creating the industry standards for yacht sales professionals, resulting in the Certified Professional Yacht Broker (CPYB) program. This industry initiative is supported by every brokerage association in North America.
In November of 2010 Vin became the Executive Director of YBAA, leading the association’s strategic and operational initiatives in partnership with the elected board members and committees.
In addition to his service to YBAA, Vin has served as the President of the Connecticut Marine Trades Association and was the founding Chairman of the CPYB Certification Advisory Council (CAC). In addition, Vin is honored to represent YBAA and CPYB as a member of the NMMA Recreational Boating Leadership Council. In 2003, Vin was awarded the YBAA President’s award for “exemplary service to the profession”.

Celebrating 10 Years in Business!
Like many other ventures, Smith Yacht Sales was born from Eric's passion about boating and the Marine Industry! With his vast roledex, he quickly realized he needed to secure prime office space where he could build his team. The flagship office landed at the Hingham Shipyard Marinas which provided a destination location for prospects as well as great in-water access. Eric was welcomed to the developing location by Vinny, Donna and Cherie, our partners "in crime" downstairs!
Dana and Amy were Eric's first brokers and Jerry G quickly came aboard to support his protege! Keith added a great dimension bringing along his customers from Shoreline Aviation and Dick Ruggieri followed with his joyous personality and mechanical expertise! And this was all the first year!
Needing a little office support, Leisa soon joined the team after finding the job on Craigslist! Soon, the Website, Email Marketing and Demo Days came along with new boat lines such as Southport, Century, Patten, Metan and Albury. With all this activity our satellite offices were created. We welcomed Kyle who represented us very well out of Kittery Point Yacht Yard. We participated in Trade Shows Galore-from Newport International to Maine Homes, Boats & Harbors and everything, literally, in between! Extra hands were needed everywhere and we were lucky enough to have some fantastic interns (Charlie, Rance, John, & Abby) and summer helpers along the way, making life a lot easier for all!
Co-marketing & sales efforts continued through the years forging old friendships along and propelling them into the future- Crosby Yacht Yard & BLM- we have grown to where we are today with your help for sure.
Fast forward a few years and we now have Connie, our office mom, handling day to day office management with a forever smile and positive demeanor! Jim and his son run our thriving service department taking excellent care of our customers pre and post sale. Scott is our "go-to" broker at Great Bay Marine in New Hampshire and Dave is just a stones throw away over at Sunset Bay Marina in Hull. We have not even begun to explore all the possibilities that exist with these new Smith Yacht Sales locations! And last, but not least, we look forward to working with Todd and Dan who have recently officially joined the brokerage team and will certainly add an additional layer of knowledge and expertise to the company!
